“It’s a beautiful view David, but why take a photo? When is anyone ever going to look at that photo again?”

Abi Martel 17th November 2017

In late November 2017, David and Abi had decided to take a weekend break to Jersey. For Abi it was a chance to relax and party, but for David it was to be something else…

David had planned this since around August. He’d designed a ring with a local jeweller to suit Abi (low profile, able to fit under motorbike gloves, durable but beautiful) which was made in Guernsey, and one of a kind. He’d picked a location on the South coast of Jersey, relevant for it’s beauty, illustration, and the fact that David would always lose signal on his phone when passing that point on the Channel Chieftain every Tuesday for a year. Everything was in place.

They went out with some old friends on the Saturday night and got suitably intoxicated, but it wasn’t the alcohol that was the only problem in the end. Abi took an unshakeable liking to Pina Coladas towards the end of the evening and seemed, although surely not possible, to have necked around four pints of the stuff. She did this without the faintest idea that the bar had run out of coconut cream long ago and had substituted in some full-fat Jersey milk (Abi is lactose intolerant).

A rather uncomfortable night for Abi turned into an equally uncomfortable hangover in the morning. David was up, eager & ready to go for a walk on the south coast and dragged Abi for breakfast in a nearby cafe. David ate the rest of Abi’s breakfast while she chundered in the ladies, before both hopped on the number 12a bus up to Portelet.

When they got up to the cliffs David took a photo of the sea and sky, feeling pretty smug about the irony of what Abi had said about the photo (idea hatched for this particular web page). He led Abi down some precarious paths and rocks before getting down on one knee presenting the ring and asking her to marry him.
